Potato Seeds

I just wanted to post a quick update about the potato seeds. I had ordered some a few weeks ago, and I have no experience with them. They are not seed potato's, but actual little white seeds that are supposed to grow into potato plants.

Anyhow, the instructions sent with these were almost non-existent. I attempted to contact the company for more directions, but I never received a response. I decided to go ahead and plant these in a seed starter. I've had them in a type of mini-greenhouse.

They have now sprouted. At least several of them have. This is the point I need help with, as my other seedlings went limp after sprouting. I wonder at what point I should actually try to plant these in the ground. Or is it best to just take the top off of the mini greenhouse and keep them in a window sill for awhile?

If these potato seeds actually give a fair crop I am going to be thrilled. Really, I'm not a big potato fan, but I do love boiled new potato's.

I'm going to be doing some container gardening this spring and summer so I'd love to hear some tips. So far, I have habanero peppers, green peppers, and these potato seeds sprouting. I did attempt to do some summer squash, but only a few sprouted and they have went limp. I do not know if these can be reversed. The tomato seeds I planted never sprouted. I do have one more pack of seeds, which are supposed to be a white eggplant. I was waiting until it was a little bit warmer before attempting to plant these.

So has anyone else used potato seeds before? If so, please share.

Container Gardening and Potato Seeds

With spring fast approaching, I've been thinking about trying to start some seedlings. I've had a few squash plants to pop up and one tomato. I plan on planting these in containers and trying out container gardening. This will be my first year doing this.

I ended up ordering more seeds. A few weeks ago, I picked up a great book called, "A Slice of Organic Life" at the library. It's really put some great ideas in my head. It's perfect for a city person trying to live a more organic lifestyle. The book covers everything from making compost to having a mini chicken coop. I really love this book, and I would love to read more books like it. In the book it talks about growing potatoes in a container.

While ordering my seeds, I saw some potato seeds. These are not seed potatoes, but actual white seeds. I ended up ordering these, but when I got them they didn't have any real instructions. Has anyone tried growing potato plants from seeds? I could really use some information on this.

I've got these little seeds planted in a tiny greenhouse seed tray, so I will wait and see what happens. I'm hoping these will actually sprout and provide a good crop. I love the taste of fresh vegetables, not to mention it's really fun to work with.

Housing for Single Moms in Louisville, KY in College

I was looking at the news today, and I came across something that might be useful to single moms in Kentucky.

The Scholar House in Louisville offers housing for single moms that are in college or planning on attending college. Participants must have children and a high school diploma or GED. From what the news article said, the rent for the apartments are covered by federal housing vouchers. What an amazing program for moms that are looking to establish a better life for their children and themselves.

Currently there is a waiting list, but the Scholar House has announced plans that they are expanding by an additional 54 more apartments. If you are a single mother in the Louisville, KY area, I would definitely contact this program and get on the list. Not only do they provide a safe living area for you and your children, but they assist in other ways as well.

The contact info for the Scholar House is;
806 East Chestnut Street
Louisville, KY 40204
